The Early Years

Former President Herbert Hoover flew in one day to join other fishermen friends but first had to use the facilities which were out doors but modern. Guests and the help knew of his coming so when he came out of the facilities he had a long reception line on each side of the door, needless to say Newey and I were quite embarrassed. Mr. Hoover made the best of the situation greeting everyone and coming into the store to talk fishing and signed my three volumes of his books of Memoirs.

Square dancing was a favorite pastime after a day of fishing. At times we were lucky to have a live caller but most generally we had to use records. People young and old had great fun-though it was a big task for us as we would have to get up early to wax and polish the hard wood floors to be ready to serve breakfasts by 7:30 a.m.. A player piano entertained the children and those who actually played led sing alongs; cards, croquet and ping pong tournaments all helped to keep guests amused. On occasion a snipe hunt was instigated if we had a "neophyte".

On the last night of the season, October 31 we had a custom to have a Halloween party. Often in costumes and along with a pot luck. After the gaiety we had a very solemn time, where each person would take a piece of a pine bough, which was used in decorating the lobby and cast it into the fire place and make a wish, or offer a testimonial or prayer. This occasion later became know as the "Burning of the Leaves", which turned out to be a very touching occasion. The Ranch had and gave the feeling that we all were one big happy family.

The Ranch sold in 1969 and was taken back again by Quit Claim. Our daughter and her husband, Susan and Mike Cullen, worked for us until 1974 when they leased operations from us. Shortly there after Newey and I sold our shares to my brothers. This past year it stopped being a guest ranch and is being developed for a private club.
